Eligibility

Writers and artists published in The Stygian Zine during the calendar year are automatically entered for consideration. There is no separate entry fee or application process. If your work appears in our January or July issue, you are eligible for consideration.

Selection Process

Winners are selected by an expert panel of judges based on craft, originality, impact, and artistic execution. Our judges look for work that pushes boundaries, honours the genre, and demonstrates a strong command of horror storytelling and visual atmosphere while reflecting the best of Canadian dark fiction and dark art.

How do you judge visual and written works together?

Good question. Much in the same way we publish written and visual work together, we believe they can also be considered together through the same core artistic qualities: craft, originality, intention, execution, and impact. Different mediums demand different techniques, but strong art leaves its mark regardless of form. The Stygian Seal recognizes that shared artistic power while celebrating the different forms it can take.

 

Growing as a Community

As Stygian Media grows, so will this prize. Our goal is to increase the cash award, expand recognition opportunities, and eventually introduce multiple award categories.​
